Huntington, WV (February 5, 2010) - St. Mary’s Medical Center is pleased to announce the return of Dr. Matt Werthammer, MD to the Huntington area as part of its neurosurgery team.  Dr. Werthammer joins colleagues Panos Ignatiadis, MD, David Weinsweig, MD, and Brett Osborn, DO as the fourth neurosurgeon serving St. Mary’s Medical Center.

As a third generation doctor, Matt Werthammer comes from a family of physicians with a legacy of service to the community.  A Huntington native and alumnus of Huntington High School, Dr. Werthammer is pleased to return home.  “This is home for me and it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to come back home to Huntington and Cabell County,” Dr. Werthammer said.

Michael Sellards, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Medical Center, commented “We are so pleased to get another neurosurgeon of Dr. Werthammer’s ability to join the  team of respected neurosurgeons at St. Mary’s. I think Dr. Werthammer’s choice speaks volumesabout the quality of the neurosurgery program at our medical center.”

Dr. Werthammer received his undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University before returning to Huntington to earn his MD at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University.  While studying at Marshall, Werthammer decided to pursue neuroscience and chose the University of Kentucky for the specialized training needed to become a brain and spine surgeon.

Dr. Werthammer spent six years in residency at UK among several of the premier neurosurgeons in central Kentucky.  Although his work distinguished him enough to pursue job opportunities anywhere in the country, Dr. Werthammer chose to return home to be part of a respected team of surgeons and work alongside Drs. Ignatiadis and Weinsweig.  “Those two names are preeminent in neurosurgery in Huntington and it’s a privilege to work with them,” said Werthammer.

Dr. Werthammer serves patients at his office on the first floor of St. Mary’s outpatient building located on Third Avenue in Huntington.  In addition, he serves as one of the on-call trauma surgeons for St. Mary’s Emergency Department.  Dr. Werthammer may be reached by calling 304-525-6825.
